HPAT-Ireland FAQ

Straight answers to the questions students ask most about HPAT-Ireland.

Common questions

Who runs HPAT-Ireland?
ACER, the Australian Council for Educational Research. PrepGenie is an independent preparation provider and is not affiliated with ACER.
How long is the HPAT?
Two and a half hours. There are 114 multiple-choice questions in three separately timed sections: 42 questions in 60 minutes, 42 in 50 minutes and 30 in 40 minutes, with no rest breaks.
Is the HPAT sat at home?
Yes. HPAT-Ireland is a computer-based test sat by remote proctoring: an online proctor supervises you through your camera. ACER currently uses ProctorU for this.
What are the three sections?
Section 1, Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving; Section 2, Interpersonal Understanding; and Section 3, Non-Verbal Reasoning. Applicants to two University of Limerick master’s courses also sit a one-hour Written English component.
Is there negative marking?
No. Marks are not deducted for wrong answers, so you should answer every question, even if you have to make your best guess.
Can I use a calculator?
No. Calculators are among the items you may not have during the test.
Do I need to know science for the HPAT?
No. The test does not assess academic knowledge and does not require any special understanding of an academic subject.
How much does the HPAT cost?
The standard registration fee for the 2026 test was €164. Late registration cost €75 more, and the Written English component (UL applicants only) €22 more.
When are HPAT results released?
Most applicants get their results in late June. Mature applicants and applicants to the two University of Limerick master’s courses get them in mid to late April. ACER sends results straight to the CAO.
How long is an HPAT score valid?
A score can be used only for courses starting in the same year as the test. If you apply again in a later year, you need to sit the test again.
What is a good HPAT score?
There is no pass mark. ACER suggests aiming for 160 or more out of 300. In 2026, an overall score of 158 was at the 60th percentile and 181 at the 90th percentile.
Does the HPAT still count for 300 CAO points?
Not from 2027 entry. The universities announced that, for medicine from 2027, your HPAT score is weighted to a maximum of 150 points (down from 300) and Leaving Certificate points are no longer scaled down above 550, giving a maximum of 775. ACER still reports HPAT scores out of 300.
Do I need a CAO number to register?
Yes. You need to apply to the CAO for medicine first, then use your CAO number when you register for HPAT-Ireland.
