The three sections

Section 1: Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving

Questions built on short passages or on information presented graphically. You work out what follows from the information, what it assumes and how to solve the problem it sets. Section 1 guide.

Section 2: Interpersonal Understanding

Scenarios about people and their relationships. You judge what the people involved are thinking, feeling or intending, and what lies behind their behaviour. Section 2 guide.

Section 3: Non-Verbal Reasoning

Abstract shapes and figures arranged in patterns and sequences. You find the rule and apply it. Section 3 guide.

Written English (two University of Limerick courses only)

Applicants to UL’s MSc Occupational Therapy and MSc Speech and Language Therapy also complete a one-hour Written English component, typed on screen. Everyone else sits Sections 1 to 3 only.

Moving through the test

You answer by clicking an option, and move with Next and Back buttons, with a timer at the top right. A list of question numbers lets you check your answers and go back to questions you skipped. When time runs out in Section 1 or Section 2, a one-minute countdown appears and the next section starts automatically, so you cannot carry spare time from one section to the next.

No calculator is allowed, but you may use up to four sheets of A4 paper or a small whiteboard for working.

Sitting the test at home

HPAT-Ireland is sat by remote proctoring. You book a session with ProctorU, install the ACER Test App and the Guardian Browser, and a proctor checks your identity and your room before you start. The check-in can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, so allow plenty of time. ACER recommends a screen of 15 inches or larger.

Items you may not have with you include calculators, dual monitors, pencil cases and rulers, food and earplugs. The timer does not stop if you take a bathroom break. You may apply in advance for reasonable adjustments if you need them.

Timing strategy

  • Because each section is timed separately, time you save in one section cannot be spent in another. Pace yourself section by section.
  • There is no negative marking, so never leave a question blank. If you are stuck, eliminate what you can, choose your best answer and move on.
  • Practise each section under its own clock, so the pace feels normal on the day.
Registered test takers can use ACER’s free demo of the online test platform from their ACER account. Try it before test day so the interface holds no surprises.

Facts on this page are taken from the official HPAT-Ireland website and the ACER Test Taker Information Booklet for the 2026 test, checked in October 2026. Always confirm dates and rules at hpat-ireland.acer.org before you register.
